How Decaf Actually Happens?
Decaffeination is a bit of a craft. It happens while the beans are still green and unroasted. Since caffeine is tucked deep inside the bean, removing it requires a careful balance of water, temperature, and pressure to make sure the flavor stays put. Here is how the magic happens:
-
The Swiss Water Process: You’ll see this on many specialty labels because it’s 100% chemical-free. It uses a specialized coffee extract and the power of osmosis to pull caffeine out while leaving the flavor compounds behind. It results in a very clean, transparent cup.
-
The Methylene Chloride (MC) Method: Often called "European Prep," this traditional method is a favorite for maintaining a coffee’s heavy body. A targeted agent bonds with the caffeine, and the beans are then steamed to remove any trace of it. Since the agent evaporates at a low 104°F, it’s long gone before the beans ever hit the 400°F roaster.
-
The Sugar Cane Process: This one is often the most surprising. It uses a natural byproduct of fermented sugarcane to gently wash the caffeine away. It’s incredibly flavor-friendly and often leaves the coffee tasting even sweeter and more rounded than it started.
Health and Lifestyle Benefits of Decaf Coffee
Decaf coffee beans give you all the wonderful things you enjoy in coffee while stripping away the things that can harm your health. Here is what it does for you:
-
Your Heart Will Thank You: Two to three cups a day is all it takes. That simple habit has been linked to a lower mortality risk in a study published in PubMed. This is because the antioxidants and bioactive compounds responsible for it, such as polyphenols, remain completely intact during the decaffeination process.
-
No More Stomach Drama: Less caffeine means your stomach produces far less hydrochloric acid. According to a clinical trial published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, acid reflux is significantly reduced when you switch to decaf.
-
Sleep Like You Mean It: In an article published in the journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, you’ll be able to see that decaf carries far too little caffeine to stimulate your nervous system and cause sleep disturbances. Have a cup after dinner, and you'll still wake up rested.
Your relationship with coffee just got a whole lot better. Pour yourself a cup of Paddle&Brew and discover what great decaf really tastes like!
FAQs
Why do different decaf methods matter when I am choosing coffee?
Because of one bad method, the flavor can be completely gone, giving you a horrible coffee experience. This is why we pick the decaf process based on the bean, not convenience, and the difference is obvious in the taste.
Can I drink decaf multiple times a day without overdoing it?
That is the whole point! No caffeine means no build-up, no crash, and no reason to stop at one. Drink as many cups as your day calls for.
How do I know if a decaf coffee will feel light or rich before buying?
We describe every roast clearly so you are never guessing. Pick what sounds right, and that is exactly what you will get!
Does decaf coffee still have natural compounds beneficial to my body?
More than you would realize! Decaf keeps a lot of what makes coffee good for you. Our process is chosen specifically to make sure as little of that is lost as possible.
What makes small-batch decaf better than mass-produced options?
Smaller batches mean we actually know what is in every bag, and so do you. If a small-batch is not roasted to perfection, it never reaches you. It’s so small that we consume it.
Why is ethical sourcing important when I buy decaf coffee?
The bean's journey starts long before it reaches us. Better conditions, fair pay, and responsible farming produce better coffee.

Understanding Micro-Roasted Coffee Beans
The process uses precise temperature control to develop a nuanced flavor profile, resulting in micro-roasted coffee beans. These micro-roasted coffee beans deliver high freshness, quality, and craftsmanship, preserving their origin.
-
Small-Batch Roasting
When it comes to overseeing each and every coffee bean, roasting tiny 1–5-pound batches is the right approach. By using this precision, we can prevent over-roasting. This helps to lock in the vibrant, unique origin flavors that big industrial roasts usually destroy.
-
How Micro-Roasting Enhances Flavor
More precisely, micro-roasters adjust the heat to highlight intrinsic fruit, floral, and acidic notes. This craftsmanship enhances the depth of flavor and complexity, which mass production often lacks.
-
Precise Roast Profiles
We treat every batch like a unique recipe. By tweaking the heat to nail the Maillard reaction just right, we balance sweetness and acidity to pull out a much deeper, more complex cup.
-
Bean Origin and Quality
These aren't mystery blends; they’re high-quality, single-origin beans from specific farms. You can actually taste the "terroir" things like the high altitude and rich soil that mass-produced coffee simply can’t replicate.
Here are some key factors that give micro-roast coffee its unique characteristics:
-
Careful roast development produces cleaner cups with distinct acidity, body, and finish, appealing to specialty coffee drinkers.
-
Moderate coffee consumption has been associated with enhanced metabolic rate and alertness due to caffeine’s physiological effects.
FAQ’s
How can I keep the original flavor of my micro-roasted beans as it is?
You can freeze your micro-roasted beans. An airtight container away from sunlight works too.
Does Dark Roast have more caffeine?
While dark roasts offer a bolder, more intense taste, they don’t have more caffeine.
Can I use these beans in my standard drip machine?
Definitely, our light and medium roasts are crafted to taste incredible in everything from a Pour Over to a French Press.
Which roast is best for a specialty coffee beginner?
Go for a medium roast like "First Light" for a smooth, sweet, and perfectly balanced introduction.
How soon should I brew after the roast date?
Give your beans about 3–7 days to "rest" so the flavors can fully settle before blooming into their peak self.

Rare Coffees. Remarkable Stories.
Micro and Nano Lot coffees represent the pinnacle of specialty coffee — small, carefully selected parcels from a single farm, cooperative, or even a single plot of land. Every cup tells the story of a specific place, a specific harvest, and the hands that made it possible.
What Makes a Micro-Lot Special?
- Small-batch provenance — sourced from individual producers or family estates, not blended across farms
- Heirloom & rare varieties — cultivars like Geisha and El Eden that are prized for their complexity and rarity
- Distinctive processing — from extended dry fermentation to natural and washed methods that shape every flavor note
- Traceable origin — you know the region, the farm, and often the farmer behind every bag
These are coffees for the curious — for those who want to taste the difference that terroir, variety, and craft make in the cup.

Understanding Single Origin Coffee Beans
There is only one location where single-origin beans come from, like a single farm, estate, or region. Not a single bean is mixed in from a different region than this one location.
This type of coffee is a real reflection of the soil, altitude, temperature, and process used in that particular region where the coffee is grown. This has a direct impact on the smell and taste, which is unique for that particular region.
Traceable means that single-origin coffee is traceable back to a particular farm or seller. As this is harvested at a particular time of year, the taste might differ slightly with every batch.
What makes single-origin coffee beans unique and premium?
Quality Selection and Defect Removal
Single-origin beans are carefully picked and sorted by hand to eliminate defective beans, such as those that are damaged or haven't matured. This produces a much more consistent and high-level cup of coffee.
Smaller Production Runs than Commercial Blends
The majority of the time spent growing, harvesting, and handling these products is more focused when done in smaller quantities, such as our Sun Kissed Siesta, which has only 31 bags per order. All of this focus yields a better quality product.
Elevated Quality Expectations
Many origins have met the standards required for defining "specialty", meaning they have been evaluated by an external expert for flavor, aroma, acidity, and overall balance. We choose the highest-scoring beans, helping to provide the best possible experience for consumers.
Choosing Varieties
We choose only those varieties of coffee that are considered refined and produce distinct flavors.
Fresh Crop Availability
Single-origin coffee is typically released immediately after harvest. This helps maintain the natural coffee aroma, oils, and flavor, making for a fresh and vibrant coffee experience.
